Title: “Assembling responsive nanoparticles”
Time: 18:00
Place: Hall C, Chemical Center, Naturvetarvägen 14
Abstract
Self-assembly is not only the key construction principle that nature uses so successfully to fabricate its complex molecular machinery, it has also fascinated colloid and materials scientists for decades. Traditional self-assembled materials based on colloidal building blocks suffer from the fact that the emerging structures are often polydisperse and irregular. This has led to a number of exciting developments in order to overcome these deficiencies, such as the construction of more complex colloidal building blocks that allow for the incorporation of directional interactions, a transfer of concepts such as specificity and molecular recognition from supramolecular chemistry to the colloid world, and the use of directed self-assembly. In this seminar I will describe the use of responsive nanoparticles such as thermo- or pH-sensitive microgels as ideal building blocks to investigate the relationship between interactions and self-assembled structures. These particles are not only attractive model systems for basic research, but also of considerable technological importance to materials science and nanotechnology for the fabrication of nanostructured responsive or smart organic-inorganic hybrid materials. The combination of nanoscale inorganic moieties with organic polymers allows us to create materials with enhanced or even completely new properties, and I will show that we can design, synthesize and assemble functionalized responsive nanoparticles in order to make adaptive polymer-colloid nanomaterials with tailored optical, magnetic and mechanical properties.
Info
The lecture is open to the public and will be held in english. After the lecture there will be an informal reception at the Centre for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS), where you can meet the lecturer and the other attendants. Pea soup with punsch and pancakes (50 SEK) will be served, as well as other refreshments.
Register for the reception no later than Monday 16/4 by sending an e-mail to anita.hoang ‘at’ chem.lu.se
Entrance E at Naturvetarvägen 14 will be held open a short time before the lecture for visitors without access-cards.
Welcome!
