SUMMARY:Advanced Course on Charaterisation of Powders within Pharma\, Food and Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:I Oktober erbjuder Lund University Commissioned Education en tredagarskurs inom avancerad karaktärisering av pulver för yrkesverksamma och doktorander. Karaktärisering av pulver är ett viktigt steg inom pulvertekniken men i dagsläget finns ingen ensam teknik som ensam kan ge en tillräckligt tillförlitlig uppskattning av pulvrets karaktär. Detta gör att det finns ett behov av att använda flera kompletterande metoder för att få en bättre förståelse av partikelegenskaperna som behövs för att bygga upp en framgångsrik process. Genom kursen kommer deltagarna introduceras till flera olika laborationsmetoder för att karaktärisera pulver tillsammans med de främsta synkrotronstrålnings metoderna vilka öppnar nya dörrar för att karaktärisera läkemedel och komplexa material. Ett av kursens syften är att deltagarna ska få svar på frågor som ”Vilken metod är användbar för att ge mig en bättre förståelse av de problem mitt pulver för med sig.” \nKursen ges på engelska. \n

SUMMARY:"Reflections on the biointerface: Structure\, interactions and processes"
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture at the Chemical Society in Lund by Tommy Nylander Lund University\, Sweden Professor of physical chemistry and Reciever of the Norblad-Ekstrand medal Title: ”Reflections on the biointerface: Structure\, interactions and processes” Day: Thursday October 19th Time: 18:00 Place: Hall C\, Chemical Center\, Naturvetarvägen 14 Abstract Biological membranes do not only occur as planar bilayer structures\, but bilayers have also been shown to\, depending on the lipid composition\, curve into intriguing 3D structures. In fact the important role of curvature of lipid membranes have been increasingly been recognized. Understanding biological implications of such curved lipid interfaces as well as exploiting their full potential in applications\, for e.g. drug delivery and other biomedical applications\, poses a challenge that requires the development of novel\, well-defined and versatile model system. We will discuss how this can be achieved by the supporting surface topology\, e.g. vertical nano-wire arrays\, or by changing the lipid composition or by introducing components\, e.g. responsive particles\, which can alter the curvature as a response to the environment. We will discuss how the lipid self-assembly structure can be change in desired way by adding a particular type of lipolytic enzymes. Here the (oil) triglyceride aqueous interface is important also for other processes like emulsification. Our results show that uptake of water in the triolein phase can occur and this can be affected by the presence of lipolytic enzymes. Bakom arrangemanget står Svenska Kemisamfundet\, Nationalkommittén för kemi\, Kemilärarnas resurscentrum och IKEM. \nVarje år tar IKEM fram ett nytt spännande experiment tillsammans med Kemilärarnas Resurscentrum och några utvalda Science Centers. Årets experiment handlar om hur kemi ger oss bättre hälsa genom förbättrad hygien och rent vatten. Precis som tidigare kommer det att vara vardagsanknutet och lätt att genomföra. \nAllt som behövs till experimenten packas sedan i ett materialpaket som lärare kan beställa utan kostnad. I paketen finna även lärarinstruktion och informationsmaterial till eleverna. Varje materialpaket räcker till en klass med 30 elever

SUMMARY:Formulation Technology in Pharmaceutics\, Nutraceutics and Cosmetics
DESCRIPTION:I slutet av Oktober planerar Lunds Universitet att hålla en intensiv tredagarskurs inom formuleringsteknik. Formulering är en viktig hörnsten för utvecklandet av produkter inom bland annat livsmedels- och läkemedelsindustrin. En framgångsrik formuleringsutveckling kräver en grundlig förståelse för både kundens önskemål och de komplexa interaktionerna mellan individuella komponenter i en formulerad produkt. Modern formuleringsteknik gör det möjligt att utveckla produkter som är framgångsrika i att kombinera prestation\, producerbarhet och stabilitet. För att lyckas med detta måste kunskap från fysik samt organisk och icke-organisk kemi sammanslås med processteknik och produktdesign. Kursen handlar om att ge en överblick över viktiga koncept som påverkar utvecklandet av formuleringar. Efter kursen skall deltagarna ha fått en förståelse av den moderna formuleringstekniken och hur en tvärvetenskaplig metod kan användas för att utveckla och förbättra kommersiella produkter. \nKursen ges på engelska.

DESCRIPTION:Public lecture at the Chemical Society in Lund by \nKenso Soai\, Tokyo University of Science\, Japan\nProfessor of applied chemistry \nTitle: ”Asymmetric Autocatalysis and the Origin of Homochirality” \nDay: Monday October 30th\nTime: 18:00\nPlace: Hall C\, Chemical Center\, Naturvetarvägen 14 \nAbstract\nAsymmetric autocatalysis is a reaction in which chiral product acts as a chiral catalyst for its own formation. We found asymmetric autocatalysis of pyrimidyl alkanol with significant amplification of ee in the enantioselective addition of diisopropylzinc to pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde. Starting from pyrimidyl alkanol with extremely low ee as asymmetric autocatalyst\, pyrimidyl alkanol with >99.5% ee was formed. By using asymmetric autocatalysis\, the origin of homochirality has been examined. It was found that chiral inorganic crystals such as quartz\, chiral isotopomers\, chiral crystals composed of achiral organic compounds\, circularly polarized light (CPL)\, enantiotopic face of achiral mineral\, i.e.\, gypsum\, act as chiral triggers in asymmetric autocatalysis to afford the product with high ee of the corresponding absolute configuration with those of chiral triggers. Absolute asymmetric synthesis without the intervention of any chiral factor has also been realized by asymmetric autocatalysis. \nInfo\nThe lecture is open to the public and will be held in english. \nAfter the lecture there will be an informal reception at the Centre for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS)\, where you can meet the lecturer and the other attendants.
