The Swedish Chemical Society is a co-host of the international meeting on dendrimers, IDS13, hosted by Prof. Michael Malkoch, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The meeting was officially opened today, September 30, by the Vice President of KTH, Prof. Mikael Lindström.

The first plenary lecture was given by Professor Donald Tomalia, one of the founding fathers in the field of dendrimer chemistry. In his presentation, he referred to the hypothesis formulated by the ”father of Swedish chemistry” Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1830: “all new molecular arrangements and new architectures of isomeric compositions are expected to exhibit completely different properties.”

The quote provided a historical perspective on the development of dendrimer science and highlighted the connection between molecular architecture and properties that remains central to the field today.
